BLEPHAROPLASTY

The procedure

It is the process used to refresh and enhance the form of the eyelids.
By means of a well hidden incision in the upper eyelid, excess skin and fat is removed. For the lower eyelid, two different techniques are used depending on the condition of the eyelid and the patient’s age.
The process lasts an hour and a half.
It can be carried out with local anaesthetic with sedation, or with general anaesthetic.
It can be an outpatient recovery: four hours at the clinic and then home. Or the patient can stay until the following day.

Post operation

Relative rest.
The stitches are removed in three days.
You should maintain the head raised with cold compresses of camomile over the eyelids.
Back to work in a week
Apply make-up in 10 days

Know more about blepharoplasty
Blepharoplasty is a word of Greek origin (blepharon = eyelid) (plasticos= adjustable for moulding)
It is any other procedure which is used to give shape or to modify the appearance of the eyelids.
It can be carried out only to eliminate the formation of fat bags and loose skin around the eyes or to correct a droopy eyelid.
It is the procedure of choice to brighten and refresh the ocular area.
In the pre-operation consultation the following are evaluated: the condition of the eyes, laxity of the skin, the use of contact lenses, allergies, infections or the dose of medication which can diminish the production of tears. In addition, any record of thyroid gland and smoking will be taken into account.
The procedure is over the upper and lower eyelid, but it varies from one to the other.
For the upper procedure, the excess skin and internal fat which affects the eyelid is thoroughly dried out. It is stitched up, leaving some stitches that will be removed in three days.
There are two different types of procedure for the lower eyelid: to evaluate if it is going to dry out the skin, normally patients over 50years old in general.
At present, fat is tended to be conserved rather than extracted. A technique of fat repositioning and of the preseptal orbicularis muscle position can proceed to a canthopexy or a canthoplasty , depending on the laxity of the skin.
In younger patients and with good cutaneous tone, the fat is extracted with a transconjuntival technique which doesn’t leave any type of mark.
This operation is not for eliminating wrinkles of the lower eyelid, nor to get rid of crow feet. These wrinkles are not modified with this process.

Asian and Oriental eyelids.

The majority of people of Eastern origin, such as Chinese, Japanese, Korean and South-east Asian, all have a fold in the upper eyelid, different from the Western population.
The lid fold in the western man is 8mm from the eyelashes while it is 5mm in the eastern man, the fold of the skin that drops over this fold is more abundant in the latter, to an extent that it hides this fold. This is why we say that single eyelid.
People of Asian origin use this term habitually.

Usually one eyelid is double and the other one is single, or the lid fold of one is more defined than the other. For this reason, the majority of these cases want symmetry. There are various methods to give the fold of the eyelid a western position, in other words, to obtain a double eyelid.
The appropriate one will be chosen at the consultation.

The mild protrusion of the jawbone is common amongst Japonese and the concave nasal bridge, were the main indications for the increase in the nasal bridge with silicone replacement during the last century in Japan. The objective was to balance the increase of the nose while simultaneously taking importance away from the light protruding jawbone, and trying to increase the cheeks.
This fact drove to the mass production called “surgical beauty’(seikeibijin). Although no clear definition of seikeibijin exists, this term is used in Japanese society. Seikei means organization of form, and Bijin means beauty in the sense of a beautiful person . So, the term could mean “beauty whose form has been organized”.

The intervention is done with local anaesthetic and sedation.
The duration is one hour
The recovery at the clinic is 4 hours and then at home.

Complications

All surgical procedures run inherent risks which include haemorrhage and infection.
The haematoma occurs in 1.5% of all cases.
Infection has an incidence rate of 2.2%
Ocular irritation, conjunctivitis
Ectropian: the displacement of the eyelid in the opposite direction to the ocular globe. It is rare but it could need more surgery.
Hiperpigmentation and asymmetries can occur but they are rarer.
